Background of the study
Health education is a critical factor in promoting the utilization of maternal healthcare services, particularly in regions where awareness and accessibility are limited. In Ibadan North Local Government Area, health education programs aim to inform women about prenatal and postnatal care, emphasizing the importance of timely medical intervention during pregnancy. Studies have shown that enhanced health education leads to increased attendance at healthcare facilities, improved maternal health outcomes, and a reduction in maternal morbidity and mortality (Adesina, 2023). Moreover, community-based educational initiatives help dispel myths and cultural misconceptions, encouraging more women to seek professional care (Ogunyemi, 2024). Recent research also suggests that tailored health education interventions can effectively change health-seeking behavior, resulting in better utilization of available maternal healthcare services (Balogun, 2025). This study explores the impact of health education on maternal healthcare utilization, providing a basis for refining public health strategies in the region.

Statement of the problem
Maternal healthcare utilization in Ibadan North is suboptimal due to limited health education, cultural barriers, and inadequate awareness of available services. These challenges result in lower prenatal and postnatal care attendance, negatively affecting maternal and neonatal health outcomes. The inefficacy of current educational programs calls for a thorough investigation into their impact on healthcare utilization, aiming to identify gaps and propose improvements (Adesina, 2023).

Objectives of the study:

  1. To evaluate the impact of health education on maternal healthcare utilization.

  2. To identify barriers to effective health education.

  3. To propose strategies to enhance maternal health education programs.

Research questions:

  1. How does health education influence maternal healthcare utilization?

  2. What barriers limit the effectiveness of health education programs?

  3. What strategies can improve maternal healthcare uptake?

Research Hypotheses:

  1. Health education significantly improves maternal healthcare utilization.

  2. Cultural barriers impede effective dissemination of health information.

  3. Improved educational programs will lead to better maternal health outcomes.

Significance of the study
This study offers valuable insights for health policymakers and practitioners, highlighting the critical role of health education in enhancing maternal healthcare utilization. The findings will support the design of targeted interventions to improve maternal and neonatal health outcomes in Ibadan North.

Scope and limitations of the study:
Limited to the impact of health education on maternal healthcare utilization in Ibadan North Local Government Area, Oyo State.

Definitions of terms:

  1. Health Education: The process of imparting knowledge to promote healthy behaviors.

  2. Maternal Healthcare Utilization: The use of healthcare services by pregnant and postpartum women.
